I am currently a computer science student at Western Governors University and have experience with building Web3 projects. What's the best way for me to land a role after graduation this year? Really want to talk to any mentors who have experience hiring new grads.

Responses

I've hired new grads and helped many others find their first role in the tech industry. Some of the things hiring managers are looking for when they interview:

  • Can you code?
  • Can you communicate about code?
  • Can you work well on a team?

An engineering manager and their team will invest many hours for multiple months to help get a new graduate up to speed because of each of these three areas. Most graduates I know will focus their entire time on improving their coding. Their time could be better spend on learning to communicate about code and working on group projects.

For new graduates, finding the first engineering role is the hardest. It may take hundreds of applications and multiple conversations to land your first role, and many more after that in order to get the right role. If it seems hopeless, keep at it. Finding a job is alot like fixing a bug in the code. It's frustrating until it works. Then it's all worth it.
