Along the way to getting my PhD in social psychology, I decided to abandon academia. Throughout grad school, I explored careers in data science, science journalism, and UX research. I took part in a few hackathons before discovering that product management was a thing, and it sounded really appealing. To overcome the "chicken and egg problem", where companies want to hire PMs with experience, but you can't get experience without getting hired, I worked for equity at a tiny company - it was just my founder and I, with a couple of contract engineers - while finishing my dissertation. I got an offer to work at a business data startup in the Bay shortly after. I spent four years there and was largely responsible for the entire "web" (vs. "email") side of our business - it's funny how work gets divided when you have only two PMs in the company :D I've been at GoFundMe since, where I am currently a principal product manager.

I was one of the first kids on my block to get the internet but didn't know about product management till several years into my career. I studied Biology and Philosophy in college but didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up. Was a general business hire at a startup, then a nontechnical founder, then a content marketer, and eventually broke into product at Etsy. Went back to being a founder and CEO and eventually had my startup acquired by Facebook where I built B2B and consumer products at scale.
As a first generation immigrant where my parents really weren't able to provide any professional guidance or support, I relied on peers and mentors to help me navigate challenges. Asian Americans are often hired into tech organizations but rarely promoted or make it into the senior ranks. That's something I hope we can change. BIPOC candidates often struggle to make it in the door and face ongoing skepticism around their capabilities and we need your voice and vision if we are to build a better future.

I got into tech from an Art (Sculpture) background. Being self-taught, I hit -a lot- of bumps in the road (some necessary, some not so much). I've been in tech for 10 years now, and currently work as a senior engineer at a finTech startup.

I got into tech by trying all things design (from character design to VFX and motion). I faked my way into UI design by doing some concept work. Flash forward to now β I've been doing this for the past eight years β the last four of those years I spent building professional tools at Netflix. I enjoy designing and building things. I often feel most comfortable in a hybrid role, taking on some product management and trying development once in a blue moon. I worked at small startups and big tech; I navigated career changes and professional disappointments. I don't have the answers, but I have the experience to share.
